| Abstract | Fully hadronic $B$ meson decays provide a powerful tool for studying the hadronic properties of excited $D$ meson states beyond the $1S$ ground state, which remain not well explored. This thesis presents the study of the decay $B^- \to D^+ \pi^- \pi^-$, aimed at investigating orbitally excited $1P$ charm states. The goal of this work is to determine their widths, masses, spin, and other key properties. A Dalitz analysis is carried out by reconstructing the decay $B^- \to D^+ \pi^- \pi^-$ via $D^+ \to K^- \pi^+ \pi^+$ decays. Simulated Belle II data are analyzed to show the sensitivity of the analysis to physical parameters, assuming the integrated luminosity of Run~1. Gaining a more precise understanding of these charm states will aid in improving our knowledge of semileptonic processes, such as $B^+ \to D^{\ast} \tau^+ \nu_\tau$, where semileptonic contributions from higher charm states are an important background. This improved understanding will help reduce uncertainties in future determinations of the elements of the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa (CKM) matrix. |
